Near the Sonderborg suburb Vollerup, Sonderborg District Heating has built a central 10.000 m2 solar heating facility. A biofuel boiler plant with two boilers supplement the system that supplies CO2-neutral Green District Heating to the Sonderborg-area via a district heating network. The solar collectors supply more than 50 % of the suburb's heating requirements. In addition to the thermal solar collectors sits an array of 100 m2 Photovoltaic Solar Cells that supply the facility's pumps and instruments with CO2-neutral electrical power.
Included in the area of Sunpark Vollerup is an excavation and exhibit of a Viking house from the eighth or ninth century. The Sunpark is open to the public and is a good location for a visit to the Sonderborg-areas future and past.

A new biomass-plant is in construction process and will supplement the solar heating facility and expand the capacity for new district heating subscribers.
