SmartEnCity partner, Sønderborg Forsyning,  is well on its way to realizing the vision for a green waste sector and thus backing up a CO2-neutral Sonderborg area in 2029. Waste sorting is an important tool.

Since October 2020, Sønderborg Forsyning has more than quadrupled the collection of plastic for recycling, and throughout 2020, 990 tonnes of CO2 were saved in Lighthouse City Sonderborg, just from household waste sorting.

Sønderborg Forsyning implemented a new waste sorting for households last year and this has meant that the residual waste has been halved in the last months of 2020 and that 100 tonnes of plastic are now collected every month.

Specifically, the collection and recycling of plastic has meant that 990 tonnes of CO2 have been saved in 2020, compared with 520 tonnes in 2019. This is shown by ProjectZero's Monitoring Report 2020, which tells about the development in CO2 reductions in the Sonderborg area.

“In just six months, we, together with the citizens of Sonderborg, have halved the amount of waste that we send for incineration and we have sent 3 times as much for recycling than we did before, so when the waste is sorted, we all help to save on our earth's scarce resources ”, says Hans Erik Kristoffersen, director at Sønderborg Forsyning.

Recycling reduces oil consumption

Plastic is primarily made from crude oil and in fact 4% of the world's oil production is converted into plastic and where it takes 2 liters of crude oil to make 1 kilo of new plastic, it only takes 1 liter of oil to make 1 kilo of plastic from recycled plastic, which can be converted to including sleeping bag filling, fleece sweaters, toys and insulation.

“If we want to ensure sustainable development, it requires that we reduce the footprint we put on nature with all our small and large actions in everyday life, and an important element in this context is to change the way we consume our common resources. on, including plastic ”, says Hans Erik Kristoffersen.

When Sønderborg Forsyning collects the plastic waste, it is taken to a sorting plant in Gråsten, where the waste is sorted into plastic types, pressed into bales and sent for recycling, where the plastic is finely sorted, washed, melted and made into small pieces of raw plastic granules, which are used in production. of new products, such as plastic bags and fleece sweaters.

Your waste is picked up by green cars

In the autumn of 2020, Sønderborg Forsyning sent 14 green garbage trucks on the street, 4 powered by electricity and 10 powered by gas, as an integral part of the new waste sorting concept with 10 sorting fractions and the switch to the green garbage trucks is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 300 annually. ton.

“Since 2007, Sønderborg Forsyning has supported Sonderborg's ProjectZero vision and our goals are, among other things, that we must establish more solar cells at our locations, which count positively in our own CO2 accounts and the same applies to gas production at the largest of our treatment plants. and it is clearly our goal in the future to think of solutions that can reduce or contribute positively to our CO2 accounts - and thus a contribution to a CO2-neutral Sonderborg area in 2029”, says Hans Erik Kristoffersen.

In 2007, Sønderborg Forsyning emitted 17,777 tonnes of CO2 and the goal was 10 years to reach a total emission of approx. 8,900 tons of CO2.

"We reached the goal and in fact we have succeeded in reducing emissions further - namely by as much as 72% to a total of 5,159 tonnes in 2017", says Hans Erik Kristoffersen, director of Sønderborg Forsyning.
