About Sonderborg´s Gehry Harbour Project
The harbor project was started in November 2006 by Sønderborg Municipality and Bitten & Mads Clausens Foundation. The vision is to help the city´s harbour contribute to the vitality of Sonderborg, making it a high-quality and attractive city for residents and visitors.

The ambition is to create a sustainable area which is unique in Denmark and Europe. An area characterized by outstanding architecture high-quality buildings and numerous activities. The aim is to make the area attractive to its residents, newcomers and visitors.

In 2007, the world-famous architect Frank Gehry was hired to design the Masterplan to transform the old industrial waterfront of Sonderborg harbor into a vibrant area.

The GEHRY Masterplan was presented in October 2008. It is a three-dimensional model – a form study – which sets the overall architectural tone and outlines the vision and dimensions for the entire area. The Masterplan encompasses buildings with a total floor space of approximately 52,000 square meters. Transformation of the harbour area started in 2011 and will proceed over a number of years involving developers and architects working on the specific buildings and outdoor areas.

By 2014 two major building constructions have been completed and more buildings are in process.
